Cage (Corp Security #2)
by:Harper Sloan
4 Stars

Blurb ~ Greg Cage was born to protect. While growing up, he was his mother and sister’s shield against the world… until he failed. For the last decade, he has carried that guilt and need for vengeance around… until it was stripped from him. Now, with his best friend getting married and no longer needing his protection, he is even more lost, completely adrift, and desperate for some control. All he has ever known was how to protect: his family, his friends, and his country. Can he go against everything he has ever known, and give up that control?

Melissa Larson will never let anyone hold the reins in her life. She has been the rock in her family for more years than she can remember, and the fight to keep them together is her main priority right now. She has always been fiercely independent and proud. The last thing she will ever do is ask for someone else’s help. But when that choice is out of her control, forcing her to rely on others to save her and her family, and pick up the pieces that are left, will she be able to let someone else be her strength?

The second Greg locks eyes with Meli, he knows that she is someone he needs. Someone he craves. Meli knew the second she met Greg that he would be nothing but trouble and heartache. Her life takes an unexpected turn, and that bitch Fate is back to wreak more havoc on another member of the Corps family.

All hell breaks loose, leaving Greg no choice but to call in a favor. He hooks back up with his old friend Braxxon Breaker from the Breakneck MC. Together, they make sure that nothing threatens anyone Greg loves again.

My Review

Cage unfortunately did not live up to my expectations. Certainly not in the wake of Axel. Don’t get me wrong, the story was great and I really enjoyed it but Cage was not as impressive as I thought it would be. In fact, at times seeing Cage one on one was like seeing a completely different character than we were introduced to in Axel. He was such a great friend and ally to the girls in Axel that his man-whorish ways and sometimes unfeeling actions separate him from who we met before.

I think one thing that made this harder for me to get into was Cage with some random skank. For someone who claims to be a lover of women, he’s kind of a dick once he gets his rocks off. I can’t lie and say I don’t feel a sense of ownership over the male leads in many of the books I read, so I don’t like to see them with other women. Mixed with Cage’s lack of caring and he came off differently this time around.

That being said, Cage is still a hot badass and once he sees his Melissa, the world around him barely exists. The past connects these lovers in ways neither expects. Their demons are like a chain, linking them together but still baring enough weight to break apart. Together they are stronger but demons always have a way of wreaking havoc and these two have a lot of drama and issues to overcome before either can be truly happy.
This series is truly starting to become a fan favorite and I can see why. Plus with all the hot bodyguards on their own stories on the way I can’t help feeling like a kid at Christmas waiting for more. Or better yet a drug addict waiting for a fix, they are that delicious.

I really enjoy Harper Sloan’s writing. Her love of books really plays out here and all the added plot points and different story elements all together make one hell of a read. For a starting writer this book and Axel are written remarkably well, with little to no errors. I was sucked into Cage and Melissa’s story and like with Axel I was sad to see it end.

Overall I would certainly recommend this story, especially for fans of Axel. Each story works as a standalone but it does work better to read this second, as Axel and Izzy (the lovebirds) are frequent pop-ins in Cage as well as a few other minor characters like the amazing Dilbert. I can’t wait for more of this series and though Cage was a great read and I enjoyed every minute of it, Axel still holds the number one card in my heart, even if I’m holding out hope Beck, Cooper and Lock will rock my socks off even more. Next up is Beck’s story, and unfortunately there’s no release date except for 2014, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we can ring in the new year with another Corps Security man.

Author Info:
Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of
Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they
dubbed 'Estrogen Ocean', much to her husband’s chagrin. Harper has a
borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her
with her ereader attached. As an ex-reviewer and blogger, Harper's passion
for reading runs deep. It wasn't until 'Axel' decided to take up residence that
she realized her true calling.
She started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep
at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It
didn't take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at
nothing to have their story told.
