Blurb ~ I am not a good man.

I have lied and cheated and stolen. I've decided between life or death, like it was my due. None of it matters, not anymore. These are not my sins.

I see her raise her hands, the dark metal she's clutching reflecting the moonlight. Her finger trembles as she cocks the gun pointed at me. Her eyes are cold, determined, but I know.

I know her.

My name is Devon Andre and I confess my sin. I am not a good man because this is the woman I love.

She pulls the trigger.

I was expecting a bit more from this book than I received, that being said I still immensely enjoyed it, though I could have done without the big SECRET that was revealed a little over half way through. At this point I felt like the characters were in on something and I felt left out, and even though it worked within the story it disconnected me in a way that I could not re-connect. It felt like the characters themselves were unaware of their own minds and it was really annoying as if what they were saying all along were lies too. Even with all the tension and drama these characters have in their lives, they still are able to maintain an air or normality which considering their Mafia ties and lifestyles is hard to fathom.

“Nothing worth having ever comes easy.”

The story starts, dead in the action as Leighton spies on the infamous and dangerous Devon Andre. Her family and his are mortal enemies and when Leighton gets causght Devon has no choice but to take her or kill her. Seeing as she’s the prized daughter of his enemy Devon knows he can use Leighton to his advantage, so he takes her and keeps her prisoner. Leighton is no wilting flower and will do any and everything she can to escape. Unfortunately for her, rescue is not in her future as disappearing is something she often does and her family thinks nothing of it. Leighton is at a loss and doesn’t know how to come to terms with her circumstances, perhaps enticing Devon will work and boy does she try. At this point in the story we find out a huge secret that was kept from readers. I hated that. Not only did it give me whiplash but it separated me and I was unable to reconnect in the same way. Although I admit I still NEEDED to know how Devon and Leighton would work things out.

“I should have just left her there. It’s not like I have an overwhelming urge to play her knight in shining armor. God knows she’s not a damsel in distress. The woman is poison, like all the Moores are.”-Devon

Devon is a killer, that’s his life and a life Leighton is familiar with. She stands in the way of something Devon wants and hurting her and seeking revenge becomes his main priority. Devon is so set on his revenge he fails to put all the pieces together and as you can imagine this adds more drama to an already tense read. I love these mafia reads and I think in many ways this stayed somewhat true to the reality of it all.
“I’m warning you right now not to cause any trouble.”
My eyes snap to his, narrowing. He wants me to be his good little prisoner. Yeah, that’ll happen.
“And if I do?” I ask
“Then you die, Leighton.” The way he says it, his tone perfectly even, as if he doesn’t care either way, had me panicking. –Leighton and Devon

Overall I enjoyed this story. I wish readers were made more aware of the characters pasts but even so I loved the dynamic and love/hate relationship between Devon and Leighton. Leighton is a bad ass and though Devon is a delicious bad-ass mafia hitman, he doesn’t scare her and she makes sure he knows it. Watching these two succumb to feelings they both despise and don’t appreciate was in many ways funny. Sure there were things I wished happened differently but  nothing is perfect and this book fits the reality of their situation. More importantly I think having the dual POV’s made the book much stronger and easier to see where each character was coming from in addition to seeing the inner workings of their crazy minds. Also it’s a stand-alone with a HEA so that helps… I look forward to more from Autumn Karr and Sienna Lane.
