“Easy,” Caleb murmurs behind me.
“I’m fine.” Maybe if I keep saying it I’ll start to believe it myself.
He moves up behind me and nudges my legs apart. “Widen your stance for balance.”
I fire again, and my blood thickens as adrenaline pumps hard and fast through me.
It doesn’t take a Navy SEAL to figure out how to line up the sights, and I squeeze the trigger, again and again, my body taught with aggression that I didn’t even know I’d been holding.
Shooting is great therapy.
When the magazine is empty, Caleb wordlessly shows me how to switch it out, and I continue to throw the bullets down the range, clip after clip, until all four are spent.
I set the heavy gun on the shelf, pull my goggles and earmuffs off and step back. I have to lock my knees because my legs feel like Jell-O and I’m afraid I’ll fall. My arms are humming, I’m panting, and I swear to God, I could run a marathon.
Suddenly, Caleb steps up behind me and presses the button to bring the target back to us.
“Take a deep breath,” he whispers against my ear and I instinctively respond, pulling in a long, deep breath. He presses his chest against my back, his thighs against the back of my own, and pulls in a long breath of his own. “You smell so fucking good.”
His cock stirs against my backside, through his jeans. He pulls his hands up my arms and down my sides to my hips, where he rests them as he runs his nose up the side of my neck.
With the noise and feel of the gun still in my head, my heart still pounding like crazy, I want him.
Now.
“You have no idea how fucking good you feel pressed up against me like this,” he whispers, his voice rough and strained.
“I think I have an idea,” I respond, surprised to hear the raw need in my own voice. Closing my eyes, I lean my head back on his shoulder and relish in the feel of his hands kneading my hips and his face pressed into my neck. My nipples are puckered and straining against my bra, and goosebumps have broken out up and down the length of my body.
I want him unlike anything or anyone I’ve ever wanted before.
“Caleb.” His name is a whisper, a prayer.
“Smell so damn good.”
“Touch me,” I demand softly. His hands still. He kisses my neck softly, takes a long, deep breath, and then backs away.
I turn around in surprise and in full-blown anger.
“What kind of game are you playing?” I demand.
“I’m not playing a game.” He crosses his arms over his chest.
“Caleb.” I just stare at him for a long moment. Thirty seconds ago his hands were on me and he was whispering the sweetest things in my ear.
Now he’s turned back into the drill sergeant.
And men say women are confusing.
Finally, he turns and pulls the target down.
“I’ll be damned,” he whispers.
“Let me see.”
There are a few stray bullet holes around the white part of the target, but in the center of the chest and the top of the head are two good-sized holes where my bullets pierced the paper.
“You’re a natural.” I shrug like it’s no big thing, but inside I’m doing the mega happy-dance. “Not so much a pussy, I guess.”
Caleb laughs, long and loud and scoops me up into a long hug.
“Definitely not a pussy,” he agrees as he pulls away from me.
“Caleb?” My heart is beating hard, and I’m still pissed at him. He’s smiling down at my target, but when his eyes meet mine, he sobers.
“Yeah.”
“Don’t fucking touch me like that again unless you plan to finish what you start.”
His eyes go hard and his jaw tightens. Before I can turn and walk away, he grabs my wrist and pulls me against him, pinning my arms between our bodies.
“Let’s get this straight, Brynna. I want you so fucking bad my teeth ache. I’ve wanted you for months. But you’re part of my family, and I’m supposed to be protecting you. Dropping my guard and fucking you into the mattress is not the way to keep any of you whole.”
I gasp as his words sink in and I want to beg him to take me home do exactly that; fuck me into the mattress, but before I can speak, he lowers his forehead to mine and clenches his eyes closed as if in pain.
“I’m not going to fuck up our friendship, or make things weird for you with my family, just because I can’t keep my damn hands off you. You mean too much for that.”
I lean into him, wanting to comfort him, but he sighs, lifts his head and plants his lips on my forehead for a long few seconds and then backs away, turns his back on me, and loads the weapon and clips back into his locking gun box.
“I apologize. I won’t touch you again.” Before I can argue, ask him to talk with me about this, he stalks off ahead of me. “Let’s go.”

I almost started this review with, “Oh, my God,” but then I thought of the things this book taught me and remembered that taking the Lord’s name in vain is a big no-no. But Wow, this book was thrilling and absolutely exceptional. To say I was shocked would not only be a lie but an understatement. You never know what will come out of Lexie’s mouth and her mind is just as intriguing. I have so many notes and comments about her inner and outer dialogue it’s insane. The plot was - can we say original, how about awesome!!! Sure there was romance, a bit of a love-triangle and a lost heroine but boy-oh-boy will this book shock you and rock you. It was a joy to read and I was sad to see it end.  The setting is so realistic you will feel as if you are there experiencing Rome right along with Lexie.



Life experience is not something Lexie really has. Even close friends are not something crucial in her life, sure she has buds but her best friend is Trent, her step-brother. But after a few years at college and a cheating boyfriend, she is beyond ready to change that. For her junior year, Lexie is on her way to Rome where she will continue her studies and be able to gain more knowledge in her major, Art History. Rome is like the golden Mecca for Lexie and seeing some of her favorite artists work’ in person is like her own live wet dream.



I loved the Catholic element to this book. Let me be clear I am not Catholic nor do I really categorize myself as any particular religion like when I was a child. A huge theme in the story is the Catholic Church but never does it feel peddled or pushed on readers. In fact Lexie’s uplifting dialogue and outrageous thoughts make it more acceptable. Her character portrays a realistic and life-like persona; it’s as if she represents a piece of all us females. She has regrets, and for her the way to seek penance is confession.



Before leaving for her trip, something tremendous and life-altering happens. She sleeps with her brother. (Note to self, if admitting this to a priest be sure to highlight the fact that said brother and you are not really related.) Lexie doesn’t know how to deal with their actions and so her trip could not have come at a better time.  When she arrives and the guilt is too strong she seeks out absolution and in turn finds herself being mentored by (is it blasphemous to call a priest-in-training, hot, delicious and totally lick-able????).



Together Lexie finds herself in a position to not only help young children but also tour and learn more about her passion. Her job is to make her love and passion for art radiate to young children, keep them both immersed and entertained. She goes above and beyond her job and the passion she exudes for all the art was easily captured by both the children and me.

As Lexie continues to go to school and tour with the children, she becomes closer with her priest. Of course, him being close in age, hot and with a dreamy accent to boot certainly helps. He assists Lexie in looking outside the box. Her passion for art is not something she can easily compare to his wanting to be a priest but overtime she begins to understand. Gripping, eye-opening and un-put-downable are the best ways to describe this book. I won’t say more because this is one of those stories that need to be experienced. You don’t need to be religious or even a believer, Lexie is a vivid splash of color in an otherwise drab room and she will not disappoint.  In the end only one guy can win. As usual I was hoping she could snag both but so rarely are my prayers answered. Even still I was happy with the ending Lexie’s soul-searching journey. I loved the romance aspect to the book and can’t wait for the next installment. I can’t recommend a better book.  The ending was beyond spectacular and I loved how we got to see her and her chosen man work things out. Either way there are obstacles to face and the love between the two is like a sappy Hallmark card that you can’t stop reading. (No cliff-hanger but the next book will feature Lexie’s other guy….)



Not only is the story itself absolutely amazing, you will be sucked in from the start, best part, you will learn so many useful and fun facts about Rome and Italy that will make you laugh and dream of your next vacation.



Tips via Lexie
-    Everyone in Rome, including taxi drivers, are suicidal and insane.
-    Priests recommend finding other ways to redirect lustful energies
-    BEWARE! Just because you are in Italy does not mean everyone around you including the priests do not speak nor understand English
-    It is better to experience the ‘orgasmicity’ within Rome without a priest around
-    Ogling a sweaty and buff priest while he works out will not condemn your soul
-    Currant croissants are an orgasm for the mouth
-    Italian art is erotic and eye-opening. Perhaps leaving small easily frightened children at home is best.

I loved this book. It was a great story about overcoming grief and finding love when you least expect it. Both Lily and Kyle are struck with the love bug as soon as their eyes meet. The two continue to challenge and embrace one-another making Beautiful Chances an enjoyable read.

 After a car accident takes her family, Lily hides away. She runs from her cousins, her aunt, life and the world in general. She moves away to Florida where the surf and sun are her constant companions. She works as a writer and often spends countless hours writing on the beach. One day Lily happens to look up and notices someone looking back. Kyle literally crashes into her life and the two quickly form a closeness that Lily does not know if she is ready for.

“I want you, Lily. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted anyone so much, and I barely just met you.” - Kyle

Kyle immerses himself in Lily’s life from the start. The bond between them may be forming fast but there is no denying the chemistry and sparks that fly. Since hiding away from life on the island, Lily only has one friend. A male friend Luke, who may or may not want more from Lily than she wants to give. It didn’t add a whole love-triangle aspect to the story but it definitely gave Kyle a reason to hone his protective and dominating instincts and boy was it HOTT!!

Three years have passed since Lily has been on Sanibel Island. Her aunt continues to ask her to return home and though she promises she will ‘soon’, everyone knows she doesn’t mean it. Kyle helps Lily not only deal but come to terms with some heavy grief she suffers from the accident. She holds herself responsible and can’t understand why she is and has to be alone. But with Kyle, she’s alone no longer.

Since the accident happened and Lily began hiding, she never had normal college experiences. Things like first kisses, dates and losing her virginity are all things she writes about but can’t fully understand without experience. One of the great things about Kyle was how he pushed Lily. She was too stuck in la-la land she kept putting off life. Kyle barging in screwed up her plans and made her live in the now.

Kyle is currently on the island for a business trip. He buys buildings to sell but his real passion is building and construction. Kyle genuinely cares for Lily and there were quite a few ‘Aww’ moments. Plus throw in his Army experience and I was Alpha-happy.

Why I love Kyle

Kyle was a very heartfelt and genuine male character. From the first moment he lays eyes on Lily he’s stuck and he does any and everything he can to prove himself to her. He makes her problems his problems and has definitely marked himself a top book boyfriend.

For the most part this was a very light read. What I could have done without were the creepy notes and her friend Luke’s crush. Both were just too predictable and not only that, they seemed to try and add more drama to the story than was needed. Luke added a jealous tinge that was annoying and sad as he was her only friend. The ‘stalker’ was a bit corny but it did make me wish Kyle was grabbing, guarding my body. It made you curious and stuck in the back of your mind since it was obvious something suspicious was happening but it never amounted to anything at least in this book. I was and am upset that the story is not over for these two, in fact I pouted like a fifth grader when it ended. However, there was no cliff-hanger so that kept me happy. I would recommend the book for that alone!!!
